Owston's white-backed woodpecker is a large woodpecker living only on Amami-Oshima, dark overall, with a conspicuous red crown in males. In deep evergreen forests it digs insects from decaying wood. It needs old-growth forest and is few in number, so it is protected as a Natural Monument.
