The white-naped crane is a large crane with white feathering from the back of the head down the neck, and it visits Japan in winter. It moves in pairs or family groups, feeding in paddies and wetlands. Izumi in Kagoshima is one of Japan's leading wintering grounds for this species and the hooded crane, and "the cranes of Kagoshima Prefecture and their wintering grounds" are a Special Natural Monument.
