Japanese Otter

Lutra nippon

The Japanese Otter was a weasel-family animal that once lived in rivers and along coasts across Japan, eating fish and crabs. Hunting for its fur and degradation of rivers reduced it, and sightings became rare after the 1970s. In 2012 the Ministry of the Environment declared it extinct. It had been designated a Special Natural Monument.
