The Kerama deer is a subspecies of the sika deer living on the Kerama Islands of Okinawa, smaller than deer on Honshu. It is said to have been brought to the islands during the Edo period and has adapted to island life. Because its range is so small, the deer and its habitat are designated a Natural Monument.
