The dugong is a large marine mammal that grazes on seagrass, swimming slowly in shallow seagrass beds, and is sometimes said to have inspired mermaid legends. Waters around Okinawa Island form the northern edge of its range, where it is extremely rare, and it is protected as a Natural Monument.
