The Japanese serow is a bovid endemic to Japan, related to cattle and goats rather than deer. It lives alone or in small family groups in mountain forests and holds a territory. Once reduced by overhunting, it recovered under protection and is a Special Natural Monument, with designated sites including ones in Aomori and Niigata.
