About the Kumejima Firefly

The Kumejima Firefly is found only on Kumejima in Okinawa. Its larvae live in water and feed on snails. Adults appear from late March to around mid-May, usually peaking in mid- to late April, and glow along waterways. Because it is sensitive to changes in the island's waterside habitat and its range is small, it is protected as a Natural Monument of Okinawa Prefecture.
