About the Ryukyu Robin

The Ryukyu Robin is a small bird whose male has a reddish head and back and a black face and breast. It lives in dim, shrubby forest understory and sings a clear, high song. It breeds on the Danjo Islands, the Tokara Islands, Amami Oshima and nearby islands, and Tokunoshima; migratory individuals winter in the Sakishima Islands and elsewhere. The current Japanese bird checklist recognizes no subspecies, and the Okinawa Robin is treated as a separate species. It is vulnerable to forest development and is a national Natural Monument.
