About the Iwame (landlocked masu salmon)

The Iwame is a markless form of the masu salmon complex, lacking the usual parr marks and black spots. The population in the designated habitat in Taketa, Oita, is considered a mutant form of amago. It lives in a very small number of mountain streams, including those in the Sobo mountain area of the Ono River system. A habitat at Kobaru in Taketa is a national Natural Monument, and the Iwame of the Sobo mountains is a Natural Monument of Oita Prefecture.
