About the Orange Tip (Kumomatsumakichou)

The orange tip is a small white butterfly found in the mountains of central Honshu, including some lower mountain sites. Males have orange forewing tips, but females do not. Its caterpillars feed on mustard-family plants. A habitat is designated a prefectural Natural Monument in Niigata, while Toyama and Nagano protect the butterfly itself without restricting designation to particular sites.

About the Luehdorfia puziloi

Luehdorfia puziloi is a yellow-and-black butterfly resembling the Japanese Luehdorfia. In Japan it occurs locally from Hokkaido to central Honshu. It appears in early spring in deciduous woods and grassland, and its larvae feed on wild ginger. It has one generation a year. In Gunma, the species itself is a prefectural Natural Monument; in Niigata, a habitat shared with Anthocharis cardamines is designated a prefectural Natural Monument.
