The Crested Ibis has white plumage tinged with pink, a red face, and a long curved bill. It once lived in rice fields and wetlands across Japan, but overhunting and habitat loss drove the Japanese birds extinct. Today breeding based on birds from China continues on Sado Island in Niigata, and reintroduction to the wild is under way. It is a Special Natural Monument.
