About the Kandachime Horse

Kandachime are large horses grazed year-round in the Shiriya district of Higashidori on Aomori Prefecture's Shimokita Peninsula. They descend from Tanabu horses of Nambu ancestry crossed with imported breeds, including Breton horses, and are hardy in cold conditions. Formerly used for farming and hauling, they and their habitat were designated a prefectural Natural Monument in 2002.
