About the Giant Mottled Eel

The giant mottled eel is a large, blotch-patterned eel living in rivers and spring-fed waters of warmer regions. It hides in rock crevices by day and hunts crustaceans and fish at night. Sites in Wakayama, Tokushima, Ehime and Nagasaki prefectures are designated Natural Monuments, valued as populations near the northern edge of the species' range.
