Melitaea protomedia is a small butterfly with dark markings on orange wings. In Japan it formerly occurred in the Chugoku Mountains and nearby areas from Hyogo to Shimane; the Ministry of the Environment currently reports its presence in Okayama and Hyogo. Its larvae feed on Patrinia scabiosifolia and Japanese valerian. It has declined through loss of managed grassland and deer browsing, among other threats. A habitat in Kagamino, Okayama, is designated a prefectural Natural Monument.
