The Hime-botaru is a small firefly about one centimeter long whose larvae live on land among leaf litter. In early summer evenings adults flash regular yellow lights in woodland. Unlike Genji fireflies, it lives in forests rather than by water. Its sites in Iwate and Okayama are designated Natural Monuments.
