The Oita Salamander is a small salamander living mainly in Oita Prefecture and parts of Kyushu. In early spring it lays banana-shaped egg sacs in ponds and ditches, and it spends most of its life under leaf litter in woodland. Breeding sites have shrunk through development, and its habitat at Saiki Castle Hill is a Natural Monument.
