The Poplar Admiral is a large nymphalid with white bands on black wings, sometimes called a phantom butterfly. In Japan it occurs in Hokkaido and a few mountain districts of central Honshu, where it inhabits cool streamside forests and similar habitats. Its larvae feed on poplars such as Populus maximowiczii and P. tremula. In Gunma and Nagano, the species itself is designated a prefectural Natural Monument without a specified locality.
