The moorland clouded yellow has yellow wings in males and white wings in females. In Japan it occurs in the mountains of central Honshu, including alpine and subalpine grasslands. Its caterpillars feed on bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), rather than cowberry. Gunma and Nagano designate the butterfly itself as a prefectural Natural Monument without specifying particular habitats.
