The Japanese alpine populations of the chequered skipper have yellow spots on dark brown wings. In Japan, they occur in the Northern and Southern Alps, mainly in subalpine grasslands around 2,000 meters, along streams and forest edges. Adults appear in summer and visit flowers for nectar. In Nagano Prefecture, the butterfly itself is designated a Natural Monument without a specified locality.
