The Japanese crayfish is Japan's native crayfish, about five centimeters long, living in cold, clear streams and springs in Hokkaido and northern Tohoku. Nocturnal, it eats fallen leaves and small animals. Unlike the introduced red swamp crayfish it depends on cool water, and habitats such as those in Akita are designated Natural Monuments.
