A small catfish endemic to Japan, found in rivers flowing into Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay. Nocturnal, it hides in rock crevices by day. River development has reduced its numbers. In 1977 the species itself was designated a national Natural Monument without specifying an area, and in 2011 its habitat in the Nakamura River in Matsusaka, Mie, was also designated.
