The Hariyo is a small stickleback living in spring-fed waters in places such as Gifu Prefecture. It carries sharp spines on its back, and in spring the male builds a nest of water plants to guard the eggs. It depends on cool, clean spring water, and its habitats and breeding sites are protected in several places.
