Itasenpara (Deepbody Bitterling)

Acheilognathus longipinnis

The Itasenpara is a bitterling found on the Nobi and Toyama plains and around Osaka, with males taking on vivid colors in the breeding season. It lays eggs inside freshwater mussels, so it needs waterways where mussels thrive. Habitat loss has reduced its numbers, and it is also a nationally designated endangered species.
