Leach's Storm Petrel is a small seabird with a dark brown body and a conspicuous white rump. It spends most of its life on the open ocean and digs burrows in island soil only for breeding. Daikokujima off Akkeshi in Hokkaido is a notable breeding site; the birds come and go at night, and the island's seabird colony is a Natural Monument.
