The white-bellied woodpecker formerly found on Tsushima belonged to the subspecies Dryocopus javensis richardsi. The last confirmed Japanese records were a pair collected in 1920, during the Taisho era; the Japanese population is considered extinct. Nagasaki's designated Natural Monument is a mounted male collected on Tsushima's Mount Mitake in 1902, preserving evidence of its former presence there.
