A newt found only in the Okinawa Islands: Okinawa Island, Sesoko and Tokashiki. Its black body bears a row of wart-like bumps along each side where the rib tips protrude, each marked with a small red to dark-brown spot. It lives in forests, fields and parks near water. It was once grouped with the Amami population as "Iboimori" but was recognized as a separate species in 2022. Okinawa Prefecture designated it a Natural Monument, without specifying an area, under the name Iboimori.
