These are the many kinds of birds that raise their young in the forests of Mt. Hiei, straddling Shiga and Kyoto Prefectures. The forests have long been protected as sacred ground and support diverse wild birds. In 1930, approximately 8.3 million square meters of Enryakuji temple grounds were designated a national Natural Monument as the Mt. Hiei bird breeding grounds.
