The Benihikage has dark brown wings with orange-red bands and eyespots. In Japan it occurs in Hokkaido, Tohoku, central Honshu and Hokuriku. It inhabits grasslands in alpine and subalpine areas, and adults appear in summer. Its caterpillars feed on grasses and sedges. Gunma and Nagano designate the butterfly itself as a prefectural Natural Monument without specifying particular habitats.
