The grey heron, one of Japan's largest herons, has bluish-grey plumage and stands motionless at the water's edge to ambush fish and frogs. It nests in colonies high in trees. Oshima in Tokushima holds a large breeding colony, designated a Natural Monument as the grey heron and its colony site.
