A newt found only in the Amami Islands: Amami-Oshima, Ukejima and Tokunoshima. Its black body bears a row of wart-like bumps along each side where the rib tips protrude, each marked with a small red to dark-brown spot. It lives in forests, fields and parks near water. It was once grouped with the Okinawa population as "Iboimori" but was described as a new species in 2022. Kagoshima Prefecture designated it a Natural Monument, without specifying an area, under the name Iboimori.
