Abe's Salamander is a small salamander occurring locally in forest and wetland habitats in Kyoto, Hyogo, Fukui, and Ishikawa. In Kyoto it breeds mainly in November and December, laying egg sacs in spring-fed pools or ditches with accumulated leaves and woody debris. Habitat development and drying threaten its populations. Its type locality at Zennoji in Kyotango, Kyoto, is designated a prefectural Natural Monument.
