About the Mishima Freshwater Crab

Geothelphusa mishima is a small freshwater crab endemic to Kuroshima, Kuchinoerabujima, and the Uji Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture. Like other crabs of its genus, it completes its life cycle without entering the sea, and its young hatch as miniature crabs rather than free-swimming larvae. It is designated a prefectural Natural Monument because of its scientific importance for understanding island history and speciation.
