About the Kasumi Salamander

Under current taxonomy, the Kasumi Salamander, Hynobius nebulosus, occurs in Kyushu and nearby islands. Many Honshu and Shikoku populations formerly assigned to it are now recognized as separate species. Adults live on damp forest floors and breed in still waters such as wetlands and rice fields. In Kagoshima its breeding season extends from December to March, and it is protected as a prefectural Natural Monument.
