About the Oodaigahara Salamander

Under current taxonomy, the Oodaigahara Salamander, Hynobius boulengeri, is restricted to the Kii Peninsula in Mie, Nara, and Wakayama. Adults live in forests near streams and eat small animals, laying eggs beneath submerged rocks or fallen wood during the breeding season. It is designated a prefectural Natural Monument in all three prefectures. Oita's monument historically named for this species protects a population now classified as the distinct Sobo Salamander, Hynobius shinichisatoi.
