The Zenitanago is a bitterling found mainly in the Tohoku region, named for its silvery scales that resemble coins. It lays eggs inside freshwater mussels during the breeding season. Once widespread, it has declined as waterways changed and other threats increased, and its habitat in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, is protected.
