A large skink endemic to Japan's Miyako and Yaeyama Islands, with a brown back and glossy scales. It occurs in scrub, grassland, farm tracks and coastal woodland. Its distinctive distribution and scientific importance, together with increasing capture for commercial trade, prompted its designation as a national Natural Monument in 1975 without a specified geographic boundary. Habitat alteration and introduced weasels are current threats.
