A small snake found only on Kumejima in Okinawa Prefecture, living in streams within and around forests. It is thought to feed mainly on freshwater crabs, prawns and other crustaceans, and predation on frog tadpoles has also been reported. An island endemic with an extremely small range, it is designated a Natural Monument of Okinawa Prefecture, and conserving its stream habitat is essential.
