Nepa hoffmanni is a small true bug of shallow, spring-fed wetlands and waterside leaf litter, catching prey with its front legs. About two centimeters long, it is smaller than the common water scorpion and has a short breathing tube, only about two to three millimeters long, at the end of its abdomen. Its habitat is limited and vulnerable to wetland change, so sites in Aichi and Mie are designated Natural Monuments.
