The Pygmy Dragonfly, about two centimeters long, is among the smallest dragonflies in Japan; mature males turn bright red all over. It lives in sunny marshes and nutrient-poor spring-fed waters and is vulnerable to habitat change. Habitats in Toyama and Gifu, among others, are designated Natural Monuments.
