About the Hida Salamander

Under current taxonomy, the Hida Salamander, Hynobius kimurae, occurs from central Honshu westward into the Chugoku region. It lives in mountain forests near small streams and attaches tough egg sacs beneath submerged rocks. Gunma's prefectural Natural Monument retains the historical name Hida Salamander, but the protected population there is now classified as the distinct species Hynobius fossigenus.
