Post a photoThe Freshwater Pearl Mussel is a large bivalve of cold, clean rivers and is very long-lived. Its larvae develop temporarily as parasites on the gills of salmonid fish, a distinctive life cycle. Declining from water pollution and river works, its habitats such as those in Omachi, Nagano, are designated Natural Monuments.
