The Three-spined Stickleback is a small fish with three dorsal spines. Some populations migrate between the sea and freshwater, while landlocked populations remain in freshwater throughout their lives. Breeding males build nests from plant material and guard the eggs and young. Landlocked populations occur locally in cool springs and other waters in Hokkaido and Honshu. Habitats at Hakusan Pond in Fukushima, the Taya River in Tochigi, and Hongan-shozu in Fukui are designated Natural Monuments.
